Mixing and dispersion in marine waters surrounding coral reefs

Mixing and dispersion in marine waters surrounding coral reefs The sediment loads carried by the Berau river have increased drastically over the past decades, mainly due to deforestation of parts of the hinterland. Part of the terrestrial sediment is transported as suspended load to the barrier reefs, where it may harm coral reef ecosystems. Coral reefs are complex, dynamic, and sensitive systems. Slight changes in the reef environment may have effects on the health of coral reefs. Therefore it is essential to understand and predict how the turbid water form the Berau river mixes over the shelf region and how this influences the dynamics in the coral reef area. read more

Dynamics of suspended sediment in a marginal reef environment

Dynamics of suspended sediment in a marginal reef environmentWithin this project, the dynamics of suspended sediment in a highly turbid coral reef environment in West Java, Indonesia, are analyzed. The project comes under the umbrella of the Teluk Banten Research Program, which is part of the Global Change Program of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). The programme aims at the establishment of a scientifically based coastal zone management system for the Bay of Banten, West Java. read more

Hardhat time series analysis tool

Hardhat time series analysis toolHardhat is a time series analysis tool developed for use with the Coastal Research instrumented tripods. It splits and calibrates Campbell FSF and Campbell ASCII files. The calibration includes correction for air pressure and conversion to surface elevation. Wave and current parameters can be computed from measured time series. It includes a sophisticated viewing function (Graph) with zoom and pan function. read more

Turbulence and sand transport under breaking waves

Turbulence and sand transport under breaking waves Awarded a RUBICON postdoctoral grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and Marie Curie Cofund Actions, Florent Grasso has joined the Coastal Research Group for two years. His research project investigates “Turbulence and sand transport under breaking waves”. read more
