    abstract = {The Berau river, situated in east Kalimantan (Indonesia), drains a relatively small catchment area and splits into several interconnected tidal channels. This tidal network connects to the sea. The sea is host to extremely diverse coral reef communities. Also the land side of the region is relatively pristine and biologically rich. The Berau river basin still has a relatively high rainforest cover, which was 50 - 60 % in 2007. Currently, large-scale deforestation is taking place in the catchment, especially since 2005. As the Berau region develops further and deforestation takes place, the sediment load in the Berau river is likely to increase. Increasing sediment loads may be an increasing threat for the coral reefs. The impact of an increasing sediment load on the coral reef ecosystem depends on the pathway of the sediment in the river and tidal network. Since the largest areal of the coral reefs is situated close to the northern branch, the threat is largest when sediment is expelled at this channel mouth. To investigate the impact of increasing sediment load on the coral reefs, the sediment distribution over the Berau river and the tidal network needs to be predicted. The flow and sediment dynamics in the Berau river are affected by the tides. Discharge observations in the river show that water flows both landward and seaward within a tidal cycle. The river discharge was obtained by averaging the discharge over a tidal cycle. The river discharge was 605 m3/s averaged over several months in 2007 and was maximally about 1400 m3/s. At the tidal junction where the Berau river first splits, observations of flow suggests that the tidally averaged water division depends on the tidal range. This is further investigated using an idealized numerical tidal junction model. For differences between the two channels at the sea side in depth, length and width decay, tides generally amplify unequal tidally averaged flow division that occurs in the case of river flow only. Tidally averaged flow into the deeper, shorter or on average wider channel increases with increasing tidal range. For roughness differences, however, the effect of tides is to enhance tidally averaged flow into the channel with higher roughness. The tidal effect partly cancels the preference for the channel with lower roughness in the case of only river flow. This tidal effect can be explained by evaluating the balance of Stokes transport and return discharge in each channel. At a more seaward located tidal junction, phase differences in flow between the channels were up to 2 hours, which is about one sixth of the dominant tidal period. Since the water level variation is similar at a tidal junction, these phase differences imply differences in Stokes transports per unit width. These differences play a substantial role in the tidally averaged flow division at the tidal junction. Also density differences have an effect on the flow division and sediment division. Especially the sediment division is also affected by flow circulation across the channels.},

    abstract = {Nearshore sandbars are ridges of sand that are commonly observed along sandy coasts in water depths less than 10 m. Sandbars are the last natural line of defense against the attack of storm waves on the coast and, accordingly, human measures to combat coastal erosion often involve changes in sandbar height or position by means of sand nourishments. Over time, the cross-shore location of a sandbar changes in response to the variable wave forcing. The prediction sandbar migration is required to plan and evaluate the effectiveness of nourishments in mitigating coastal erosion. Cross-shore sandbar behavior is usually studied with models based on short- and small-scale (meters, seconds to hours) hydrodynamic and sediment-transport processes. These process-based models struggle to reproduce natural sandbar behavior on time-scales of a few days to weeks and have uncertain skill on the long term (months to years). A potential source of the difficulty to predict long-term sandbar behavior with process-based models is the nonlinear nature of the process equations, combined with the iterative update scheme. This introduces the possibility of exponential error accumulation, causing increasing divergence between modeled and observed states over time. Instead of studying the predictability of cross-shore sandbar behavior from the perspective of the underlying processes, it is also possible to infer sandbar dynamics from observations with data-driven models. Data-driven models extract the structure underlying sandbar behavior directly from the observations, and can therefore be used to study fundamental aspects of the predictability of sandbar behavior. This thesis investigates, develops and applies several methods to study the predictability of cross-shore sandbar behavior from an observation-based perspective. The analyses are based on 12000 daily-observed sandbar-crest locations and wave height observations collected for five sandbars at three different field sites. The importance of nonlinearity in sandbar behavior on timescales of days to years is investigated with nonlinearity-detection methods and neural network models. These analyses show that cross-shore sandbar behavior on timescales of days to weeks can be modeled as a simple relation between sandbar migration, sandbar location and wave height. On longer timescales of months to years, however, the effect of nonlinearity on predictability varies between different field sites. A further analysis of sandbar behavior with an equilibrium-based model shows that the short- and small-scale nonlinear processes underlying sandbar migration drive a sandbar toward a wave-height-dependent equilibrium state. However, sandbars are mostly out-of-equilibrium with the wave conditions, because the wave conditions change faster than the time it takes for a sandbar to reach the equilibrium location. Long-term offshore-directed trends in sandbar location develop when sandbars never reach the equilibrium locations associated with the highest waves. The trends in this type of sandbar behavior are difficult to model from the underlying physical processes because the nonlinear nature of these processes causes exponential error accumulation over time. Sandbars that do reach their equilibrium location during a storm, however, do not exhibit any trends longer than the duration between individual storms, and can be predicted with detailed nonlinear models from known wave forcings over their entire lifetime.},

    abstract = {Most present day estuaries formed within incised fluvial valleys, created during the last glacial, that drowned during post-glacial sea-level rise. The sedimentary archive of the associated river-mouth areas contains important information on estuarine evolution under different rates of sea-level rise. This thesis presents a study on the development of the mouth of the Rhine-Meuse system in the Rotterdam area, western Netherlands, between 12000-6000 BP. During the study tens of thousands of core descriptions and cone penetration test results, as well as seismic data, pollen and diatom analyses, tens of OSL-dates and hundreds of radiocarbon dates were used. The objectives were to explain: 1) the early-mid Holocene sedimentary succession of the Rhine-Meuse river-mouth area; 2) the development of the river-mouth area in the early-mid Holocene in response to rapid sea-level rise (SLR) and 3) the interaction of the fluvial and coastal systems during the early-mid Holocene transgression. Between 10.5-8 ka BP, the effects of sea-level rise started to influence the study area: groundwater rise resulted in the formation of extensive wetlands, fluvial flood basins became more frequently flooded, sediment-aggradation rates increased and finally the river valley changed into an estuary with adjacent tidal basins. Sea level reached rates of 1 m/100 yr before 8 ka BP with a period of 2 m/100 yr between 8.5-8.3 ka BP as a result of sea-level jumping. During the latter period sea level rose 4.06 0.5 m: 1.95 0.74 m background sea-level rise and 2.11 0.89 m sea-level jump. This jump is linked to the drainage of Lakes Agassiz and Ojibway in the Hudson Bay area and linked to the 8.2 event. After 8 ka BP the rate of SLR slowed down to 0.6 m/100 yr. North and south of the estuary, retrogradation of the coastline occurred at a faster rate than near the mouth at Hoek van Holland, leading to the formation of a promontory. In the upper estuary a bay-head delta was formed. Around 7.3 ka BP the main branch of the Rhine connected to a tidal inlet 20 km north of the promontory that was strongly eroded. The eroded sediment was partly used to fill in the abandoned estuary, but also to fill in tidal basins north of the promontory. The closure of the several tidal inlets resulted in poor drainage conditions and the wetland area increased rapidly after 6.5 ka BP and around 6 ka BP the coastline reached its most eastward position. The sedimentary succession was also described using sequence-stratigraphic concepts. The transition from lowstand to transgressive systems tract (TST) occurred when widespread basal-peat formation halted and gyttja accumulation and clastic deposition started. In large parts of the study area this occurred near-instantaneously during the sea-level jump. The highstand systems tract in the study area started after 6.5 ka BP with widespread peat formation in the closing tidal basins. The relatively late start of the TST is most likely typical for river-mouth areas along wide, low-gradient continental shelves where base-level changes are dominant for a relatively short period.},

    abstract = {Not only the storm intensity, but also the capacity of the beach to recover during fair weather conditions, influences the erosion trends of beaches. Susanne Quartel concludes this in her thesis in which the daily changes of the intertidal beach of Noordwijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, are described. She used daily images, which were taken around low tide by a shore-based Argus-video system. Besides, height measurements were executed monthly on the beach of Noordwijk during a period of 3 years. Only storm events that last at least 30 hours with an average offshore root-mean-square wave height over 2 m and an offshore surge level exceeding 0.5 m result in a morphologic reset of the beach. The recovery of the lower parts of the intertidal beach takes several days, whereas the recovery of beach zones with higher elevations and near to the dunefoot may take several months and thus remain visible for an extended period. When a subsequent reset storm appears before the beach is fully recovered, the associated morphologic changes disorder the trend of seasonal beach evolution and may lead to structural erosion of the beach.},
