Coastal morphodynamics

Content

This course deals with the processes determining the morphodynamic behaviour of coastal systems. Main subject is the behaviour of sedimentary environments like beach and dune coasts, barrier islands, estuaries and deltas. Cohesive as well as non-cohesive sediment play a role. The time scale concerned varies from very short (e.g. wind waves) to very long (e.g. sea level rise). The student will first learn about the dynamics of wave-, tide and currents in the coastal zone and the corresponding sediment transport processes and morphological developments. Second, the morphodynamic character, dominant processes, shapes and sedimentary products of many coastal systems are defined and explained.
