Objectives
To enable students to identify primary and secondary sedimentary structures in field outcrops, plus their hydraulic and aerodynamic relationship in assemblages and sequences, and to reconstruct their depositional environment. To gain experience in the techniques of drawing and logging the sedimentary record at different scales, via practical work on lacquer peels and in the field.
Content
- origin and nomenclature of stratification in siliciclastics - hydraulic background of single sedimentary structures and assemblages - recognition of depositional environment (alluvial, pro-glacial, glacial, tidal, coastal, shallow marine, aeolian) - elementary sequence stratigraphy - physical background and nomenclature of sedimentary structures in siliciclastics - hands-on experience in drawing sedimentary structures and sequences (logging) at field exposures and ability to reconstruct the sedimentary environment from the sedimentary field record.
